We saw the vaulted hall of traceried stone

Curled upwards into pillars, roses climbed,9 v) p% z: B" P" E0 S# G5 i7 T. h2 y
And ramped and were confined, and clustered leaves

The foliage seemed to rustle in the wind,

High pointed windows pierced the southern wall7 Q6 [3 {1 |$ C% k
Whence proud escutcheons flung prismatic fires7 p2 x8 o8 K( I
To stain the tessellated marble floor+ k' p, f* K3 h
With pools of red, and quivering green, and blue;3 y+ I/ A5 Q) w0 Q
And in the shade beyond the further door,5 d5 \9 b/ L$ k! E/ R
Its sober squares of black and white were hid
% `5 F, C' u( E: V Beneath a restless, shuffling, wide-eyed mob
3 E1 D/ i, ?# d4 W3 ]8 ?- G Of lackeys and retainers come to view3 h- W' M6 R" r* g! D

A sudden blare of trumpets, and the throng/ e# b' D3 w5 w* E
About the entrance parted as the guests
) L4 X9 n Y1 t: ~2 j+ ^ Filed singly in with rare and precious gifts.
% R8 X; i" E' c Our eager fancies noted all they brought,' U7 m6 i, e ], Z
The glorious, unattainable delights!& o) o$ g4 S0 y9 L- I- a/ ]
But always there was one unbidden guest# ^6 I3 M9 C0 B T0 S) l
Who cursed the child and left it bitterness.

* W7 I l5 O+ i$ W- d. @# t I am no more a child, and what I see# [, C1 i" f3 J0 b
Is not a fairy tale, but life, my life.! x& F# u( u( \/ F2 V9 t

The gifts are there, the many pleasant things:
K" f: k8 @* n5 v' }: [3 p: O Health, wealth, long-settled friendships, with a name
" j. I, Z& n3 i% W& T' h Which honors all who bear it, and the power
3 G& b3 O( m1 v0 c( W Of making words obedient. This is much;1 { k8 B, i* e( `/ Q, y/ A
But overshadowing all is still the curse,* r- L a; W3 ]$ m
That never shall I be fulfilled by love!
0 B# o1 a; g, V6 Z4 U Along the parching highroad of the world
# J& T$ j# o8 @6 ~! g No other soul shall bear mine company.
4 E J8 i3 u6 z. Y. n* N6 x0 K! A Always shall I be teased with semblances,
, ~$ g |2 ?& @* v/ _! j. \ With cruel impostures, which I trust awhile
4 b7 o: t$ i1 ^: q+ m' b2 W Then dash to pieces, as a careless boy7 D& e! I( L; f' R, l
Flings a kaleidoscope, which shattering
. S8 u9 d/ f& u4 X Strews all the ground about with coloured sherds.- M( K6 C; B- e& K; O6 d
So I behold my visions on the ground
/ a7 f/ M3 Z; Z3 P; I4 C! v) Q No longer radiant, an ignoble heap
! O) Z& ^2 |/ T, O% u# |( k% r Of broken, dusty glass. And so, unlit,: w* ?/ ~3 [2 c: I
Even by hope or faith, my dragging steps! r* E: [1 F% D4 h2 o, L
Force me forever through the passing days.1 Y( F: W2 }" E1 a0 {# ]: [
